Description:

The course will walk emerging translators through the basics of publication on both the level of the magazine and the book, as well as grant writing. Questions that we will consider over the course of the semester include:

How does one build an audience for one’s translations before publishing a book? What can one do to make a transition project more appealing to publishers?

How does one research and apply to publishing grants, subventions, and travel funding, and at what stage in the translation process is this appropriate?

What is the relationship between literary citizenship, volunteerism, and professional success and recognition as a translator?

Readings will include translations of classical and contemporary texts, as well as translation theory, literary journals, interviews with editors, and other texts as determined by student interest.

Ljós, “light” in Icelandic, is a music and visual project by Christian Helgi, Franco-Icelandic multi-instrumentalist & photographer.

LJÓS : Loop, electric guitar, synths, voice, clarinet, field recording & piano

Projection of moving images…Fully based on improvisation from jazz influence but integrating traditional modal music approach, with post-rock, ambient and electronic music aesthetics.

Impressionist layers of winds, percussion, synths, strings, electronics and sounds of nature are channeled together in a tribute to the elements : earth, water, air, fire and void. An invitation to elevation. The result is a set of musical landscapes, with a focus on colors, space and texture.

Βασισμένο πλήρως στον αυτοσχεδιασμό από την επιρροή της τζαζ, ενσωματώνει την παραδοσιακή τροπική μουσική προσέγγιση, με αισθητική post-rock, ambient και ηλεκτρονική μουσική.

Understanding Metaphysical Persistence of Identity of Objects Through Time

Exhibition 10-22- 2021

In Contemporary Metaphysics two of the key recurring questions are on the nature of Time and the parthood relations of Mereological Objects. The first questions deals mostly with the Ontology of Time, and second through the study of Structure of Being. The work presented in this exhibition combines the two questions, to be answered by one answer.

The difference between Time and Tense, can be perfectly mapped onto the difference between Reality and Representation. Time, irrespectively seen from the lenses of either the A-theorist or B-theorists of time; is divisible through the change it undergoes. However, tense as in what is said-of or said-in of time; is an external property or relation (depending of what model one uses to describe it), through various verb conjugation tenses. What happened, had happened, was happening, is happening, happened, and will happen during a set of time are only the six possible verb tenses out of twelve categories of simple, continuous, perfect simple, and perfect continuous tenses. Sentences like: It happened an hour ago, The Olympics are taking place right now, and The scope of Artificial Intelligence by the year 2080; are in reference to time—but not about time.

Alternatively, the instantiation of time disconnected from its mereological, temporal parts, properties and relations; does not tell us anything about time. The whole of time without its proper parthood i.e. an hour ago, taking place right now, and the year 2080; are not overlapping with time, separate, incongruent abstracts—yet still limited by quantifiers and giving us some form of information. However, upon further removal of fuzzy properties and relations the words i.e. ago, now, and year 2080, negate any possible existence of time itself.

The show “The Threat of Thinking Things Into Existence”, titled after Kathrin Koslicki’s essay of the same name, represents Koslicki’s argument against standard mereological claims that all objects are independent of propositional attitudes of intentional agents. As she argues in her book ‘The Structure of Objects’:

“Standard mereology is an attractively simple, elegant and powerful theory; as we shall see below, it requires only a single primitive notion and in its standard formulations consists of a mere three axioms. However, from the point of view of those interested in characterizing the relation between, say, a motorcycle and its parts, this system also has some counterintuitive consequences. For example, it follows from one of the axioms of standard mereology, commonly known as the Uniqueness of Composition, that there is no difference between a heap of unassembled motorcycle parts piled up in someone’s garage and the motorcycle in running condition that results from assembling these parts in a particular way: for the heap and the motorcycle, by hypothesis, have the very same parts and, according to the Uniqueness of Composition, objects with the same parts are numerically identical. Thus, standard mereology cannot tell the difference between the motorcycle in running condition and the heap of disassembled parts; from the point of view of theory, they are the very same thing.

“Moreover, it also follows from another one of the axioms of standard mereology, commonly known as Unrestricted Composition, that any plurality of objects, no matter how disparate, dissimilar or gerrymandered, itself counts as an object, even if these objects fail to exhibit interesting similarities, internal unity, cohesion or causal interaction amongst each other.”

Thus the relationship between every temporary, temporal, constituents at a particular time give rise to a whole of its own—one that cannot be replicated, nor destroyed—much like a memories; that are thought into existence as powerful objects themselves. Therefore it can be argued that abstractum out of concretum are not only time-centric temporal objects, but are the instantiation of time itself.

Zaineb Siddiqui

 

Zaineb Siddiqui born in the UK, is an interdisciplinary researcher, artist, curator and educationist; living and practicing in Lahore, Pakistan. She has done her MScR in Interdisciplinary Creative Practices from the University of Edinburgh, UK.

Siddiqui has been teaching Foundation Art History, Fine Arts post-studio seminars and Interdisciplinary Research at the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan since 2010. Siddiqui was the first Assistant Curator of the first Lahore Biennale 2018. She runs a parallel curatorial practice and in her recent job, Siddiqui developed, managed, and trained the first of its kind; an Interdisciplinary Arts Curriculum for a vast network of private schools for the Beaconhouse Group.

Her ongoing interdisciplinary research focuses on ‘Matter’ as a Pre-Cartesian, Aristotelian Substance that is a unity of both materiality and immateriality.

Κατανόηση της Μεταφυσικής Εμμονής της Ταυτότητας των Αντικειμένων στο Χρόνο

Στη Σύγχρονη Μεταφυσική δύο από τα βασικά και επαναλαμβανόμενα ερωτήματα είναι οι σχέσεις με τη φύση του Χρόνου και οι σχέσεις μερικότητας των Μερεολογικών Αντικειμένων.Tα πρώτα ερωτήματα διαπραγματεύονται κυρίως την Οντολογία του Χρόνου, όταν τα δεύτερα κινούνται στη μελέτη της Δομής του Είναι.

Το έργο που παρουσιάζεται σε αυτή την έκθεση συνδυάζει τις δύο ερωτήσεις με μία απάντηση. Η διαφορά μεταξύ του Χρόνου και των Χρονικών προσδιορισμών, μπορεί να χαρτογραφηθεί τέλεια βάσει διαφοράς μεταξύ Πραγματικότητας και Αναπαράστασης της.

Ο Xρόνος, ανεξάρτητα της προσέγγισης του Α ή του Β-θεωρητικού του χρόνου, διαιρείται μέσω της μεταβολής που υφίσταται. Ωστόσο οι χρονικοί προσδιορισμοί αποδίδουν μία εξωτερική ιδιότητα ή σχέση (ανάλογα με το μοντέλο που χρησιμοποιεί κάποιος για να την περιγράψει), κινούμενη μέσα από διάφορους χρόνους σύζευξης ρημάτων: Αυτό που συνέβη, είχε συμβεί, συνέβαινε, συμβαίνει, συνέβη και θα συμβεί στο σύνολο του χρόνου είναι μόνο έξι εκ των δώδεκα πιθανών αποδόσεων ρηματικών χρονικών εκφράσεων. Προτάσεις όπως: Συνέβη πριν από μία ώρα, οι Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες πραγματοποιούνται αυτήν τη στιγμή και το πεδίο εφαρμογής της Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης επεκτείνεται έως το έτος 2080 έχουν χρονική αναφορά αλλά δεν προσδιορίζουν ολιστικά τον Χρόνο.

Εναλλακτικά, η χρονική στιγμιαία αποσύνδεση από τις επιμέρους ιδιότητες , χαρακτήρες και συγγένειες δεν μας λέει τίποτα για το Χρόνο. Η Ολότητα του Χρόνου χωρίς την κατάλληλη μεροληψία, δηλαδή το ‘’πριν από μία ώρα’’ ή το ‘’λαμβάνει χώρα τώρα’’ ή ‘’το έτος 2080’’δεν αλληλεπικαλύπτεται, διότι τα άνω, αν και αποτελούν χωριστές, ασύμβατες αφαιρέσεις ή ακόμα περιορίζονται σε ποσοτικούς δείκτες, μας δίνουν κάποια μορφή πληροφοριών. Μετά την περαιτέρω αφαίρεση των ασαφών ιδιοτήτων και εκφραστικών σχέσεων – χρονικών προσδιορισμών όπως τα ‘’ πριν, τώρα, το έτος 2080’’ αναιρείται κάθε πιθανή ύπαρξη του ίδιου του Χρόνου.

Η τηλεοπτική εκπομπή «The Threat of Thinking Things Into Existence», που έλαβε τίτλο από το δοκίμιο της Kathrin Koslicki,, αντιπροσωπεύει το επιχείρημα της ενάντια στους τυπικούς μερεολογικούς ισχυρισμούς ότι όλα τα αντικείμενα είναι ανεξάρτητα προτασιακών ροπών σκόπιμων παραγόντων. Όπως υποστηρίζει στο βιβλίο της ‘’Η δομή των αντικειμένων’’: «Η τυπική μερεολογία είναι μια ελκυστικά απλή, κομψή και ισχυρή θεωρία, που απαιτεί μόνο μία πρωτόγονη αντιληπτικότητα και στις τυπικές της διατυπώσεις αποτελείται από τρία απλά αξιώματα. Ωστόσο, από την άποψη των ενδιαφερομένων να χαρακτηρίσουν τη σχέση, επί παραδείγματι, μιας μοτοσικλέτας και των εξαρτημάτων της, αυτό το σύστημα έχει επίσης κάποια αντιθετικότητα συνεπειών .Προκύπτει από ένα εκ των αξιωμάτων της τυπικής μερεολογίας, κοινώς γνωστό ως Μοναδικότητα Σύνθεσης, ότι δηλαδή δεν υπάρχει διαφορά μεταξύ ενός σωρού μη συναρμολογημένων εξαρτημάτων μοτοσικλέτας, που συσσωρεύονται στο γκαράζ κάποιου και στη μοτοσικλέτα σε κατάσταση λειτουργίας, που προκύπτει από τη συναρμολόγηση με έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο αυτών των μερών. Υποτίθεται ότι ο σωρός και η μοτοσικλέτα έχουν τα ίδια μέρη και, σύμφωνα με τη ‘’Μοναδικότητα της Σύνθεσης’’, αντικείμενα με τα ίδια μέρη είναι αριθμητικά πανομοιότυπα. Έτσι, η τυπική μερεολογία δεν μπορεί να δείξει τη διαφορά μεταξύ της μοτοσικλέτας σε κατάσταση λειτουργίας και του σωρού αποσυναρμολογημένων εξαρτημάτων, που από την άποψη αυτής της θεωρίας, είναι το ίδιο πράγμα.

«Επιπλέον, προκύπτει από ένα άλλο αξίωμα της τυπικής μερεολογίας, κοινώς γνωστό ως ‘’Απεριόριστη Σύνθεση’’ για την οποία κάθε πλήθος αντικειμένων, ανεξάρτητα από το πόσο διαφορετικά, ανόμοια ή αλλοιωμένα είναι , καθεαυτό μετράει ως αντικείμενο, ακόμη και αν αυτά τα αντικείμενα δεν καταφέρουν να παρουσιάσουν ενδιαφέρουσες ομοιότητες, εσωτερική ενότητα, συνοχή ή αιτιώδη αλληλεπίδραση μεταξύ τους ».

Καταυτόν τον τρόπο η σχέση μεταξύ όποιων προσωρινών, χρονικών συνιστωσών σε μια συγκεκριμένη χρονική στιγμή δημιουργεί ένα όλον που δεν μπορεί να αντιγραφεί, ούτε να καταστραφεί, που προσιδιάζει σε αναμνήσεις και για την ακρίβεια σε σκέψεις που λαμβάνουν υπόσταση και υφίστανται καθαυτές σαν δυναμικά σκεπτόμενα αντικείμενα.

Ως εκ τούτου, μπορεί να υποστηριχθεί ότι τα αφηρημένα, πέραν των συγκεκριμένων, δεν είναι μόνο χρονοκεντρικά προσωρινά αντικείμενα, αλλά είναι η δημιουργία του ίδιου του Χρόνου.

Description: The workshop will culminate in a dance theatre performance titled “ MOVE MY BLOOD”  inspired by the mythos of the goddess CIRCE. The final performance takes place at the Ancient MAZARAKATA MYCENAEAN CEMETERY 4 + 5 August 2021.

A 12 day intensive to use the fundamentals of tai- chi, virtuosic contemporary dance techniques as well and expressive theatre games to discover what is naturally contained within our bodies; that of the elements such as air, water, soil, wind and fire. The alchemy of these elements become the medium for your own unique expression. Each day we will work in a different, unique and historic location throughout the island Kefalonia to not only learn the history and geography of the island but to dig and coalesce our bodies with the elements. We practice choreography derived from our research which not only strengthens our bodies but packs the spirit into our flesh. We are challenged to go to the edges of ourselves.

Every participant has the opportunity –in addition to the collective program- to create and perform a personal performance in dates pre-arranged.

Jennifer Rose Bio

Jennifer Rose is an international choreographer, performer, teacher, director and former member of internationally renowned Shen Wei Dance Arts. She has performed at notable venues such as Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Festival du Cannes and The Olympic Theatre in Beijing. She creates works in collaboration with regional artists and musicians globally, most recently The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voice, to produce highly theatrical and visual dance theatre to ignite cultural dialogue, give power to the unheard voice and liberate the personal experience of freedom.

Her work has been presented at the US Cultural Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, Cultural Consulate of Andalusia, Spain, Ancient Ruins of Extremadura, Spain, Congress-Legalize Dance, Los, Angeles, CA, multiple venues across Oaxaca, Mexico and various artist residencies around the world. She teaches master classes around the globe based on contemporary forms, theatrical expression and martial arts principals and alternatively offers workshops on Shen Wei’s Natural Body Development Technique. She believes live performance is an opportunity for both performers and audiences to insist on real time transformation, express universal agreements and transcend the art of story-telling.
