S.I.M.LAB = Sustainable Island Model ~ Laboratory
S.I.M .LAB proposes an interdisciplinary investigation into creating a template for the ‘Plastic-Free Island’ as a working prototype towards transforming Kefalonia, Greece into a model Sustainable Island. Timeframe: 2-3 Weeks July 2014 ~ ongoing
Under the administration initiated by the Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture , we propose S.I.M.LAB. S.I.M.LAB will combine Greek, American, and Australian students from various majors including: Art, Design, Engineering, Policy Studies, Biology, Geo Sciences, Archaeology, Environmental Sciences, Technology, etc. to work together to address a shift away from plastic use dependence towards sustainable alternatives.
S.I.M.LAB’s goal is to produce possibilities for new local industries and redesign options of existing plastic forms: straws, bags, bottles and to-go cups. The options developed can be presented to local and international businesses and policy makers to promote Kefalonia as a top eco-tourism destination, and become a model for other Greek islands and island nations of the world.
Students will be trained in plastic recovery through coastal zone cleanings to include forensic analysis of material deposition, plastic typing, and source discovery methods employed by the Drifters Project. Subsequent material collection will be utilized in the creation of objects for gallery display and large outdoor –TEI gardens -public art.
In-depth information will be provided about current research on plastic toxicity to human, wildlife, and ecosystem health.
TEI will be transformed into a ‘Plastic-free campus’ by switching to alternatives for existing plastic forms. Students will work in interdisciplinary cooperative redesign groups for innovative and disruptive solutions to replace current plastic use following PPC’s Think Beyond Plastic competition.
All forms of social media will be explored and utilized to spread viral information of the ideas and information exchanged during the program including: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Vine, and new apps and engines for aggregate social prototyping.
A film will be shot in all phases of work from plastic retrieval to redesign tocommunity outreach and engagement in the production of a documentary short film that will be screened as part of the community open house at the end of program. Special lectures and additional gallery exhibition will be held at the TEI and the Ionion Center with Invitations to local business, policy makers, tourism officials and general public. As project develops, future goals include engagement with Vice Mayors, officials of environment, industry, and tourism to consider adoption of the best outcomes of the project.

TITLE: Ethno-Archaeology in Kephallenia: On the architecture of incipience

CO-ORDINATION: Dr Evyenia Yiannouli, University of the Peloponese (UoP).
ELIGIBILITY: Scientists ,Academics, Students of the fields of Humanities,Arts, Sciences, Technology…………..
LANGUAGE: Operations language is English, while discussion may be conducted in both Greek and English.
TIME: The Study is scheduled for 5 days in July 2014 (specific dates to be announced).
SUBJECT: Incipient settlement in the form of permanent building emerges at different times in the different parts of the Old World, varying little in general plan, structure and other principles of building whenever attested in Eurasia and surprisingly in the New World at a much later date. Incipient architecture may retain its typical character well after the phase of incipience. It may persist embedded in the culture of highly sophisticated complexes, as in the palatial context of Greek Prehistory. Kephallenia preserves a considerable amount of relevant evidence consisting of apparently solitary buildings with typical features of building incipience, yet of unknown date but until recently in (agrarian) use. These buildings have survived the terrible earthquakes of the island. The field study aims at the architectural documentation of these structures in sufficient detail that includes study of the landscape, building materials and technique, raw material procurement and workmanship, investigation of building phases, along with interviewing masons experienced in the traditional crafts. The work is conducted in collaboration with experts in the field of Architecture and assisted by a guide experienced in the countryside of the island.
