DRIFTERS PROJECT KEFALONIA/PLASTIC FREE ISLAND.

DRIFTERS PROJECT KEFALONIA/PLASTIC FREE ISLAND.

In 2014, Kefalonia takes the first steps toward becoming a Plastic Free Island

We begin on one island:  removing plastic pollution, making art, identifying solutions and alternatives and engaging the local community. Help us create the template for a sustainable future, one island at a time.

Support Drifters Project Kefalonia Phase 4:  Plastic Free Island!

Background:  In an ongoing collaboration with the Ionion Center for Art and Culture, Drifters Project cleans beaches and sea caves all around the incredible island of Kefalonia for its 4th year. In 2011, we collaborated with a sea turtle rescue project; in 2012, we cleaned a giant sea cave and made a short film, and 2013 saw collaboration between Drifters, Greek archaeological project A.Sho.Re, and Plastic Pollution Coalition and production of 2 more short films. In 2014, the project expands to 40+ participants.

Expansion:  Announcing the collaboration of Drifters Project Kefalonia and Plastic Pollution Coalition!!  For Plastic Free Island, we will be creating a template of social & artistic engagement. In 2014, we have created an international team of 40 students from Greece, Australia(University of Technology Sydney) and the U.S.  Utilizing Drifters Project art /investigation methodology along with Plastic Pollution Coalition’s proven methods of social engagement, we now incorporate local citizens, businesses and children with workshops and beach remediation sessions to remove vagrant plastic and address sustainable alternatives to disposable and single-use plastic. Plastic objects are the cultural archeology of our time. They are a portrait of global late-capitalist consumer society, mirroring our desires, wishes, hubris and ingenuity. These are objects with unintended consequences. Drifter’s Project methodology is to approach the sites as a forensic scientist, examining and documenting the deposition as it lay, collecting and identifying evidence of the crime.  Plastic Pollution Coalition engages all aspects of direct intrapersonal messaging and social media outreach.

JULIA HEURLING ”A HORIZON IS NOT FLAT”

A HORIZON IS NOT FLAT

EVENT: AN EXHIBITION BY JULIA HEURLING

PART OF THE WORKSHOP “MAPPING KEFALONIA”

TIME:    OPENING FRIDAY 27 JUNE 20.00

PLACE:             THE IONION CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND CULTURE

How can you activate/invite a viewer to read/visit a place through photography?

What are the limits and extensions of visual perception and representation of specific photographic works?

The title refers to how maps usually represent a two dimensional idea of reality. By taking photographic series I aim to accentuate the human experience of place, focusing on ground perspective and three-dimensional experience.

The project have developed from collecting views by photography, and investigating different ways to represent the island Kefalonia from these views. The exhibition also include photographs from the island Skeppsholmen in Stockholm. The investigations tell about views, but also about the position of the eye.

The photos are taken in series, to describe continuity, context and viewer perspective

of visual appearance. The series are combined into patterns, addressing questions as:

What do repeat do to the visual content in a photography? Will it be redundant or are other qualities than motive given attention?

I see and use photographs as a tool for visual thinking. Photographs give opportunity

to explore reality in separate constituent parts. When working with pattern, interrelations, continuity and rhythm within a composition are equally important as content of an image. The project can be seen as a subjective and slightly fictional take on a documentary medium as photography.

Similar to the idea of abstraction, pattern can be a tool to clarify, simplify and exaggerate

certain visual characteristics. “A horizon is not flat” aims to communicate and highlight characteristics as shape, colour and spatial changeability of Kefalonian views and appearances.

JULIA HEURLING

Julia Heurling works as a designer and artist specialized in pattern and Textiles. She is educated at the Swedish school of Textiles and based in Stockholm, Sweden. Among her commissions are patterns for wallpaper, iPhone cases, calendars, textiles, and artistic decorations.

The exhibition is supported by ”Iaspis“, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s Programme

for Visual Artists.
